diesel locomotive 118 692-3
|Builder:||Lokomotivbau Karl Marx Babelsberg|
|Power output:||2.000 PS|
|Maximum speed:||120 km/h|
Diesel loco 118 692-3 has been included in our collection as it is typical of the types of engines which replaced steam in the Altmark at the beginning of the 1980s. In fact, the locomotive itself is already a museum piece – indeed in 1997, it was only days away from being cut up. When the Deutsche Bahn AG agreed to let us have the locomotive on long-term loan, it was rescued from its resting place in Wittenberg. In the meantime, it was restored cosmetically in Salzwedel.
Delivered in February 1968 carrying the running number V180 292, with its two 1,000 HP engines it was one of the second generation of main-line diesels on the former German State Railway. It had a top speed of 120 km/h.
Unfortunately we are unable to demonstrate the loco working as one of the engine bearings is defective and the radiator cooling system for the motors was seriously damaged by frost during the period it was in open store after withdrawal.
